What the lullabies we sing to our children reveal about us

Together with photographer Hannah Reyes Morales, Mallory and the team explored the role lullabies play in bedtime rituals around the world. They identified 5 countries to visit, each facing a unique challenge for caregivers. To bring the lullabies to life for the readers, audio producer Rupert Compston accompanied Hannah to each place, collecting the songs from bedscapes and bedtime rituals. For Mallory, it was critical to that the songs be incorporated into the print and digital experience, as a storytelling component in and of themselves. She worked with designers and audio producers to link the songs QR codes throughout the magazine layout, and embedded them in the digital story experience as the reader scrolled through the piece. The images, audio, and video were essential for the Instagram story, as well as animations created to visualize the meaning and feeling behind each song.

The story received praise from readers, and both Hannah and Mallory received messages from readers sharing their own traditions, and how bedtime rituals had been renewed after reading the story.

Hannah and Mallory participated in a virtual live event, in conversation about the story, which can be seen here.
